NEW YORK – Congresswoman Nydia M. Velázquez (D-N.Y.) has secured $438,000 in support from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for a new women’s health services initiative in Sunset Park. The resources, delivered yesterday to leaders of the Lutheran Family Health Centers, will help increase access to breast cancer screening and prenatal sonograms for the residents of southwest Brooklyn.
“Lutheran Family Health Center is dedicated to providing our neighbors with medical attention close to home. Far too often, it’s working families who have the hardest time accessing quality care. That’s why initiatives that bolster services in underserved communities and focus on prevention are vital to the health of New York City,” said Velázquez.
On Monday, Congresswoman Velázquez visited the site of the new Sunset Park Family Health Center. As part of the Lutheran Network, the facility will house state-of-the-art pediatric and women’s health clinics. The federal resources presented today will fund the purchase of new radiology screening and diagnostic equipment for the site. The equipment will expand vital outpatient health services and help care for another 25,000 people in this medically-underserved community.
“These funds will go directly towards the purchase of new diagnostic equipment for Lutheran’s Sunset Park Family Health Center at 2nd Avenue and 56th Street. This women’s and children’s center, set to open in Spring 2010, will expand health care access to more than 25,000 new patients,” said Larry K. McReynolds, Executive Director of Lutheran Family Health Centers.
The Lutheran Family Health Centers (LFHC), based in Sunset Park, is a federally-qualified, community-based health care system affiliated with Lutheran HealthCare. Serving more than 91,000 people in the Southwest Brooklyn community, the LFHC handles more than 550,000 patient visits a year. Their community health network – one of the largest and most comprehensive in the country – includes eight full-time community health centers, 15 school-based programs, adult and family literacy courses, three child care centers and a family wellness center.
