NEW YORK –Congresswoman Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) today presented Gouverneur Healthcare Services with $380,000 in federal resources from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).  The funding will benefit seniors of the Lower East Side and Chinatown community as the hospital undertakes a complete renovation of its nursing facility.  The upgrades are part of a “Culture Change” initiative aimed at improving the quality of life for nursing home residents by creating a more comfortable living environment.

“Gouverneur Hospital has grown and evolved over the past century to meet the needs of the diverse Lower East Side neighborhood,” Velázquez said.  “I am proud to support their latest effort to create a homelike environment for residents of their nursing facility.  This project shows Gouverneur’s dedication to providing our seniors with top quality care in a safe, comfortable setting.”

Gouverneur’s Nursing Facility provides 24-hour care for individuals in need of short- or long-term care, offering skilled nursing and rehabilitation care.  A central part of the hospital’s modernization project is the creation of a new, 295-bed nursing facility. The Residence at Gouverneur Court will resemble a luxury apartment building and include recreational and dining areas, private rooms and suites and a resident-centered design to foster a sense of community.  The funding secured by Congresswoman Velazquez will outfit the facility with homelike kitchens, bathing, dining and recreational areas.

“In securing these funds, Congresswoman Velazquez has become an active partner with us in these efforts to provide patient-centered, compassionate care for our elderly requiring long-term care,” said Mendel Hagler, Executive Director of Gouverneur. “We are grateful for her support and proud that the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation has taken a leadership role in this cutting-edge movement.”

For more than a century, Gouverneur Healthcare Services has provided a high standard of care to the diverse community.  In 2008, their clinics assisted more than 290,000 patients, providing assistance that crossed cultural boundaries and economic disparities.  Serving a largely Asian and Latino population, the multi-lingual staff offers primary care and preventive health services at sites throughout the Lower East Side. In addition to the nursing facility, Gouvernor Healthcare Services provides the largest number of ambulatory care visits in the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation.  The hospital expansion will accommodate for a 15 percent increase in patient demand.
