Congresswoman Velázquez Announces $10.8 Million in AmeriCorps Funding for Organizations in NY-7
New York, New York – Congresswoman Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) announced today that five organizations in New York's 7th District will receive $10.8 million in State and Nationalfunding. These five community based organizations will be able to continue their work helping working families and youth in the Seventh District.
"From Sunset Park to Cypress Hills and Red Hook, the community based organizations that are receiving grant funding from AmeriCorps have been staples in our neighborhoods for years," said Velázquez. "With this new funding, they will be able to continue the work of helping our community by ensuring climate resiliency, developing youth, and providing quality health care across our district."
Four grants totaling $1.3 million will support organizations operating in New York. These include:
- Center for Family Life in Sunset Park, Inc: provide working families with a wide-range of social services
- Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation, Inc: For youth development
- Fund for the City of New York: to support Red Hook environmental resiliency
- Sunset Park Health Council, Inc: Healthcare for working families
Another grant totaling $9.1 million will go to the following national organization headquartered in New York's Seventh District and that operates around the country:
- Great Oaks Foundation Inc: National tutoring programs
The members serving in these organizations will join the more than 1.1 million AmeriCorps members who have served since the program's inception in 1994, earning nearly $4 billion in education awards.
The funding includes up to $2.5 million in education awards for AmeriCorps members. After a full-service term, members can receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of approximately $6,500 towards tuition at eligible schools and at certain GI Bill-approved educational programs for veterans, or student loan repayment.
