Rep. Velázquez on H.Con.Res 57 and President Isaac Herzog’s Address to Congress

July 19, 2023

Washington, DC - Today, Congresswoman Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) released the following statement regarding the House’s passage of a resolution supporting the state of Israel and Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s upcoming joint address to Congress:

“Last night, I voted in favor of a House resolution expressing support for the state of Israel and condemning antisemitism. Throughout my career, I have always strongly supported the historically deep relationship between the United States and Israel and the right of the Israeli state to exist. At the same time, I believe it is vital to condemn antisemitism, given the rising tide of antisemitism across the globe. That is why I felt compelled to vote for this resolution.

“I am incredibly concerned about historic developments in Israel, including the moves by the new government to weaken Israeli Democracy and expand settlements in the West Bank. These policies stand to undercut the important relationship between the United States and Israel and diminish a pathway for a two-state solution. I support the right to self-determination for all peoples, whether they be Israeli, Palestinian, Puerto Rican, or any other nationality. I believe that the current government in Israel is undermining this ideal. That is why I cannot attend President Herzog’s address in good conscience.”
