Reps. Serrano’s and Velazquez’s Joint Statement on Rep. Gutierrez’s Retirement

Three Puerto Rican Members Have Served Together in the House for Decades

Washington, D.C – Today, Puerto Rican Representatives José E. Serrano and Nydia M. Velazquez released the following statement in response to Representative Gutierrez's announcement that he will retire next years after 25 years in Congress.

"Today is a sad day. For more than two decades, Luis has been our friend and colleague. He has been a steadfast champion for Puerto Rico, for the immigrant community, and for his constituents in Chicago. Throughout his career, Luis has been a voice for the voiceless and many times dared to take on fights others wouldn't. His spirit and dedication will be profoundly missed here in Washington and, personally, the two of us will miss fighting in the trenches alongside him on behalf of the vulnerable. While we are saddened to hear of his retirement, we take solace in the fact that our nation is better off because of his service in the People's House."
