Velázquez Announces Planning Grants for East River Bridges
New York, New York –Today, Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) announced that the United States Department of Transportation has awarded $1,600,000 in planning grants for the comprehensive long-term maintenance and fortification of four East River bridges: Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan Bridge, Williamsburg Bridge and Queensboro Bridge. These grants will be used for planning, feasibility analysis and revenue forecasting projects that will aid application for the Bridge Investment Program.
"These four bridges are crucial to the regional transportation network connecting New York City's three largest boroughs, carrying nearly half a million vehicles a day, 130,000 subway passengers and 24,000 bicyclists in and out of the central business district, which is critical to our national economy," said Rep. Velázquez. "This funding will enable the next cycle of work to be developed, including a multi-decade roadmap of projects to stave off deterioration, prepare for the future of mobility, and fortify against climate change."
