Velázquez on NYC Board of Elections Consent Decree

Washington, DC - Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) released the following statement regarding news that the New York City Board of Elections is admitting it broke state and federal law when removing voters from voter rolls in Brooklyn last year:

"The right to vote is fundamental. Americans and especially minority communities have made profound sacrifices to secure the franchise. I am pleased that the Board will be required to take steps to address this problem in the future. I will keep a close eye to ensure these steps are sufficient to prevent this situation from ever occurring again."

Last year, it was reported that voters in Velázquez's Congressional District were disproportionately affected by the illegal voter roll purge.
