Velázquez on Passing of Joseph P. Gallagher
Washington, DC –Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) released the following statement regarding news that Joseph P. Gallagher had passed:
"I am deeply saddened to hear of Joseph's passing. Joseph was a passionate teacher, an advocate for disadvantaged students and a visionary for New York's education system. To me, he was not only a colleague, but a caring friend who truly believed in the full potential of every child.
"Joseph was most notably known for bringing about transformational change as the Executive Director of NYC Magnet Programs. After teaching English in Sunset Park, serving as District 15's District-Level Coordinator, and working as the DOE's Regional Magnet Project Director, Joseph secured millions for schools in NY-07. He also represented New York City with grace on the national stage as an integral part of the Magnet Schools of America. Our students are performing significantly better today because of his fight for educational justice.
"Joseph's contributions to New York's students are incalculable and will live on for years to come. My thoughts are with his family; may they take solace in knowing the progress he achieved toward providing all children with access to high-quality education."
