Velázquez on Puerto Rico Medicaid Provisions in Funding Package

Washington, DC – Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) commented on provisions in the appropriations package for Fiscal Year 2020 that are expected to provide matching funds for Puerto Rico's Medicaid program:

"I'm relieved this bill addresses, at least temporarily, the shortfall in federal matching funds for Puerto Rico's Medicaid program. The Island continues struggling to recover from Maria, and that natural disaster imposed enormous strain on Puerto Rico's healthcare system. These badly needed funds are critical to ensuring our fellow citizens there can access lifesaving medical care. I was deeply concerned this legislation might leave the Island behind and I am glad Congress avoided that outcome.

"At the same time, Puerto Rico's disparate treatment under Medicaid remains a longer-term issue that requires resolution. To that end, I'll continue pushing by bill, H.R. 3371, which would solve this problem permanently.

"While I am carefully reviewing other elements of the appropriations package, I'm grateful for the funding for Puerto Rico's Medicaid match. I thank Speaker Pelosi and Chairwoman Lowey for the inclusion of these provisions."
