Velázquez on Republican Government Funding Bill

Washington, DC – Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) issued the following statement regarding the Republican Continuing Resolution considered this evening on the House floor:

"Rather than governing in a responsible fashion, Republican Congressional Leadership is lurching from crisis to crisis, repeatedly passing ‘continuing resolutions' rather than long-term legislation that meets the American people's priorities.

"This continuing resolution again fails to meet that test. The measure does nothing to provide relief for the hundreds of thousands of Dreamers who, because of this Administration's hateful policies, are in jeopardy of deportation. The bill fails to provide adequate funding for community health centers. It also fails to provide requested funds allowing the Small Business Administration to continue making disaster loans in Puerto Rico.

"This legislation is irresponsible and I will be voting against it. I urge the Republican Leadership to come back to the negotiating table and work with Democrats on bipartisan legislation to keep the government's doors open. That said, to be clear, should they refuse, we must remember that Republicans have majorities in the House and the Senate and control the White House. They own any government shutdown, should they fail to govern."
