Velázquez Slams HUD Rent Reform Proposal

Washington, DC – Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) released the following statement regarding news that the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development plans to triple rent for low-income Americans and impose work requirements for those receiving housing subsidies:

"This proposal is inhumane and unacceptable. As described, these plans would constitute nothing less than a draconian assault on families, working New Yorkers, seniors and some of our most vulnerable neighbors. Under Secretary Carson's plan the poorest Americans in some of the most expensive housing markets would see their rent contributions triple. I will be joining arm-in-arm with my Democratic colleagues to stop this heartless proposal dead in its tracks."

Velázquez is a senior Member of the House Financial Services Committee and the only New Yorker to serve on the Housing and Insurance Subcommittee.
