Velázquez Announces $3.25 Million for Head Start Program

Washington, DC – Today, Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) announced that an education center within New York's 7th Congressional District has received federal grants to continue its Head Start and Early Head Start programs.

"I am proud to announce that Grand Street Settlement, Inc. will receive federal funding to continue educating our New Yorkers of all ages, income levels and abilities," said Velázquez. "This is a very generous grant and demonstrates that our government recognizes the amazing work being done by this organization."

Originally based in the Lower East Side of Manhattan and now located throughout Brooklyn, Grand Street Settlement, Inc. has provided care and educational services for children, youth and senior individuals and families since 1916. Through community centers, child centers, family centers and partner schools, Grand Street Settlement, Inc. specializes in creating a community of support, inclusion and healthy habits. In addition, Grant Street Settlement, Inc. is known for its leadership in providing special needs services. As a result, HHS has awarded Grand Street Settlement, Inc. with $3,252,801 in federal funds to continue its Head Start and Early Head Start programs.

"As we continue to fight the instability brought about by skyrocketing rents and immigrant issues, this organization has and will continue to provide a home for many of our Manhattan and Brooklyn families," said Velázquez. "I am proud to see this organization receive federal funding for creative curricula and developmental assistance."
