Velázquez on Asian Pacific American Heritage Month
Washington, DC – Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) issued the following statement in honor of Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month:
"From Manhattan's Chinatown to Sunset Park in Brooklyn, to rapidly growing communities throughout all five boroughs, Asian Americans have long been an integral part of New York City's cultural tapestry.
"In every field, from arts, to science to business, to public service, Asian Americans strengthen and enrich our nation enormously. As we take the month of May to celebrate the Asian community, we can expect Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to continue contributing to our country's achievements. This month, we should all take time to honor their profound commitment to our nation.
"As we pay homage to our Asian American friends and neighbors, we must also continue working to ensure our nation lives up to its highest ideals, embracing new immigrants, combatting inequality and prejudice, while ensuring justice and civil rights for all. This Asian Pacific American Heritage Month let us all reaffirm our commitment to these values and pledge to work together in protecting and advancing them."
