Velazquez on Asian Pacific American Heritage Month

Velázquez on Asian Pacific American Heritage Month
May 4, 2020
Press Release

Washington, DC – Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) issued the following statement in honor of Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month:

“This month, we once again celebrate how Asian Americans are an essential part of the cultural tapestry of New York City and our nation. From Manhattan’s Chinatown to Sunset Park to Queens to every other corner of our city, all five boroughs of New York are invaluably strengthened and enriched by the contributions of our Asian American communities.

“Sadly, this year, we have seen a marked rise in anti-Asian bias crimes in New York and nationally. All our neighbors of Asian descent must know we speak with one voice in condemning such hateful acts. We stand arm-in-arm in fighting prejudice against all people and we cannot rest if any New Yorker ever feels unsafe or is treated unfairly because of their background.

“As we take the month of May to honor Asian Americans and their myriad contributions to the American story, let us also rededicate ourselves to the values that unite all New Yorkers – compassion, kindness, justice and dignity for all those who make our City the greatest and most diverse in the world.”
