Velázquez on New Cases of COVID-19 in Congress

Press Release

Washington, DC – Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) issued the following statement after several Members of Congress recently announced new COVID-19 infections:

“I wish all those facing a COVID-19 diagnosis a swift and healthy recovery. As someone who contracted the virus back in April, I know firsthand how overwhelming and scary the diagnosis can be. My heart is with all Americans and their families struggling with this terrible illness.

“After I began experiencing symptoms during the Spring, I spoke with the Capitol Physician who diagnosed me with a presumed case of COVID-19. I followed all precautions including self-isolation and when doctors recommended it was safe, I took an antibody test. In late April, I learned that I had an anti-body count of 2,880. I share my experience to encourage all Members of Congress to follow public health guidelines to protect themselves and everyone around them.

“Instead of arguing over mask-wearing or social distancing, we should be vigorously following these scientifically-recommended practices to keep one another safe. By working together to take precautions, we can curb the spread of COVID-19, prevent more people from getting sick, and begin the healing process our country so desperately needs.”
