Velázquez on Passing of Rafael Hernández Colón

Washington, DC – Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) commented today on the passing of Rafael Hernández Colón:

"This morning, Puerto Rico lost one of the giants of its modern political history. Rafael Hernández Colón was a statesman, a brilliant political mind and a tireless fighter for economic and social justice.

"Early on, Rafael recognized that Puerto Ricans everywhere, on the Island or the mainland, are one family. He worked relentlessly during his three terms as Governor of Puerto Rico – and well beyond - to advance values of freedom and political inclusion for all Puerto Ricans.

"I had the privilege of serving under Rafael when he appointed me Secretary of Puerto Rico's federal affairs office where we launched one of the most comprehensive voter registration campaigns in the United States. So much of Rafael's time in public service was defined by empowering those who have traditionally been without a voice. It was my honor to collaborate with him in helping so many Puerto Ricans participate in our electoral process.

"I personally, have lost a dear friend, a mentor and an inspiration. Today, I'm praying for his wife, Nelsa, and his children Juan Eugenio, José Alfredo, Rafael, and Dora. May they find comfort in the many contributions he made to Puerto Rico and its people. Millions of lives are better because of his legacy and he will never be forgotten.

"Rafael once said of his pursuit of justice and economic security, ‘as long as I believe I'm standing the right ground, I'll hold.' He may no longer be standing beside us in the trenches, but we will carry on nonetheless and honor his memory by continuing to advance the values he held dear."
