Velázquez on President's Guns Plan

Washington, DC – Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez released the following statement regarding the President’s new initiative to reduce gun violence. Velázquez also spoke today at a Democratic Steering and Policy Committee on the topic.

“For those of us in New York’s 7th Congressional district, the tragedy of gun violence recently hit home with the death of Raphael Ward, a sixteen year old boy who was fatally shot in the Lower East Side.

“The President should be commended for taking concrete steps to help curb the threat guns pose to our families. However, addressing a problem of this magnitude will require action at all levels of government and Congress must do its part as well. While there are powerful interests seeking to maintain the current broken system, I believe that by standing together and speaking with one voice we can help end gun violence in our communities.”
