Velazquez on Purim
Washington, DC – Congresswoman Nydia M. Velázquez (D-N.Y.) issued the following statement in recognition of the beginning of Purim:
“As the sun sets this evening, I would like to wish all of my friends and neighbors a Purim Sameach. This holiday, normally filled with festivities and gift-giving, celebrates the story of Esther. In this tale, Esther speaks out against a plot to kill off the Jews of Persia. It is a tale of survival, even when times are at their most bleak, and speaks to the immense power even one individual can have by taking a stand in the name of justice.
“Purim is typically a time of celebration and charity, when children play in colorful costumes and people of all ages enjoy delicious treats. This year, the holiday may look different for you or your family, but we can still find ways to honor the holiday’s spirit safely. As we look for motivation during these difficult times, it is my hope that Esther’s tale of bravery can inspire, and the message of the holiday continues to live on.”
