Velázquez Statement on Motion to Vacate the Speaker’s Chair

October 3, 2023

Washington, D.C. – Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) released the following in advance of the House of Representatives vote to remove Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House:

“Since the beginning of Kevin McCarthy’s tenure as Speaker, he has shown the American people that he is a deeply untrustworthy person willing to lie and deceive to remain in power. He has emboldened the most radical members of his party, who are more concerned with imposing their extremist ideology on Americans than they are governing. The Speaker of the House is supposed to work on the people’s behalf, which often means working on a bipartisan basis to ensure the American people’s needs are met. Kevin McCarthy has shown that he is unwilling to do that, which brought this country to the brink of disaster during negotiations around the debt ceiling and last week’s near government shutdown. He has done lasting damage to this institution, which is why I am voting to remove him as Speaker.”
