Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), longtime leaders of congressional efforts to decolonize Puerto Rico, issued the following joint statement opposing the status legislation introduced today by Resident Commissioner Pablo José Hernández Rivera:

Washington, D.C. – With the Financial Oversight and Management Board set to certify a revised Fiscal Plan for the University of Puerto Rico , Congresswoman Nydia M.

WASHINGTON — Congresswoman Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) and Democratic members sent a letter to the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) raising concerns regarding a draft regulation prepared by Puerto Rico’s Integrated Transportation Authority (PRITA) to drastically increase passenger and freight fares of the Puerto Rico Ferry route between Ceiba and the Island Municipalities of Vieques and Culebra. If approved, the fee would represent increases of 462 and 400 percent, respectively to the only public transportation method that connects Vieques and Culebra to the mainland of Puerto Rico.

WASHINGTON — Today, Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) led a letter to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth raising concerns about the Department of Defense’s ongoing military exercises in Puerto Rico and the possibility of renewed activity in Vieques, where residents are still dealing with the long-term impacts of decades of U.S. Navy operations.

WASHINGTON- Today, Congresswoman Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) sent a letter to Doug McMillon, Walmart CEO, recommending an investigation after a Puerto Rican customer was refused the purchase of an item because the cashier did not accept his Puerto Rico Real Identity Document (ID) in an Ohio Walmart.
