Washington D.C.—Yesterday, Reps. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY), Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), and Shontel Brown (D-OH) sent a letter to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requesting an update on delays in implementation of a rule to ban formaldehyde and other formaldehyde-releasing chemicals in hair products. The FDA’s proposed ban, which follows a March 2023 letter from Reps. Pressley and Brown calling for an investigation into the health risks posed by chemical hair straighteners, has been delayed twice since April 2024.

Washington D.C.— Today, Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) introduced the Texture Positive Act of 2024, which will incentivize educational training in cosmetology schools across the country to increase the number of trained professionals with knowledge of working with textured hair. The term “textured hair” means hair that is coiled, curly, or wavy in its natural state.

Brooklyn, New York –Today, Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) announced that the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded grants to support two health centers in Brooklyn and Queens. Both these centers are Federally Qualified Health Centers which serve as safety nets that deliver comprehensive services in the community. ODA Primary Health Care Center has been awarded a grant of $1,673,257, and Floating Hospital Incorporated has been awarded a grant of $2,091,254.
